Aging like fine wine is best to describe what capitals forward Alex Ovechkin is right now. Currently in his 20th season, Ovechkin is getting very close to breaking The Great One, Wayne Gretzky’s goal record.
Wayne Gretzky scored 894 goals in his historic NHL career and with the start of the season the Washington Capitals are having, Alex Ovechkin is not far off and may surpass it this season.
Ovechkin did not have a great start in the 2023-2024 season, as in December of that season, he had an 11-game goalless drought, which caused concern for Capitals fans who anticipated him to break Gretzky’s record.
The Capitals started to pick up the pace in early 2024 as Ovechkin went on a hot streak, finishing the season with 31 goals, leading his team to the second wildcard spot. Ovechkin and the Capitals got battered by the Presidents Trophy winners, the New York Rangers, in a sweep, losing 4 games in a row and recording zero points.
With the offseason additions of Andrew Mangiapane, Pierre Luc Dubois, Matt Roy, Logan Thompson, and Jacob Chychrun, Capitals General Manager Chris Patrick looked to improve the team tremendously while getting the right pieces to help Ovechkin break the record.
So far into the 2024-2025 season, Ovechkin and the Capitals are on fire. As of November 13th, 2024, the Capitals have a 10-4-0 record through 14 games, and Alex Ovechkin has 10 goals in 14 games. Mind you that it took 46 games last season for Ovechkin to reach 10 goals.
It isn’t just Ovechkin that is hot right now, as his linemate and centerman Dylan Strome has assisted on every single goal that Ovechkin has scored so far. Strome is leading the team in points with 22 points in 11 games, tied for 8th in the whole league. It is safe to say Ovechkin has great players around him who want him to break Gretzky’s record this season.
He is 32 goals away from surpassing Gretzky. With the current pace Ovechkin is at, he will indeed surpass The Great One and become the greatest goal scorer of all time in the hardest era of the NHL.
